Matthews Victorious on Stingy Stillhouse

November 4, 2007
Stillhouse – Stillhouse, TX

The ATX Bassmasters took to Stillhouse Hollow on Sunday, 11/4. The lake was completely different after having been 50 feet high much of the year and hydrilla, a Stillhouse staple, was non-existent. Twenty anglers competed but only four limits were brought to the scales.

Ed Matthews got one right bite, a 7.41 pound big bass, to go with four keepers yielding first place honors with 13.47 pounds. Ed reported catching all of his keepers on jigs fished around main river ledges near shore. He caught fish on a black/blue jig early, switching to a green pumpkin jig later and finally back to black/blue after boat traffic started muddying the water. The big bass fell to the black/blue jig early on the second pass through a section of rocky bank. The win gave Ed enough points to tie Mark Peevey in the AOY race that will come down to next month's Battle on Buchanan.

Adam Clark continued his streak of top finishes with a 10.33 pound limit. Adam picked up four keepers on his first pass down a bank fishing a Norman crankbait. Thinking he was on a roll, Adam made several more passes without a sniff from a keeper. He made a move up river and picked up his limit fish throwing jigs and texas rigs in the log jams. Adam made a late move to a sand bar and was able to cull right before weigh-in fishing a Texas rigged Zoom Speed Craw around isolated stumps.

National Nitro team member Gerald Goff, who was tied in points with Clark going in to the tournament, also caught a 10.33 pound limit. A fish care penalty knocked Gerald back to 10.08 pounds and dropped him one place back in the AOY race. Gerald, fishing from his Mercury powered Nitro Z-9, caught fish early on a black buzz bait fished around stick ups. He moved to some main lake points around mid-morning and picked up fish on a c-rigged Zoom Speed mud bug. Later he picked up more fish drop shotting a Robo Worm in the trees. He wrapped up his day fishing a 1/2 ounce Omega football jig on rocky banks.

David "The Good" Peevey weighed in the final limit at 9.90 pounds to take fourth place. David reported putting his limit together fishing a "doctored" Texas rigged watermelon/cream laminate Yum Dinger fished around shoreline cover on a weighted hook.

Henry Meyer took fifth place with a 3 fish sack weighing 7.46 pounds. Henry reportedly caught his fish on a crank bait so secret that even his neighbor O'Dell doesn't know about it!

O'Dell Woolley's 5.60 pound 3 fish sack took the final Top 6 spot. O'Dell caught his fish up the river on a Texas rigged Muscadine Zoom Brush Hog. O'Dell fished around wood drifts, rock bluffs and big gators! He took pictures of an 11 foot alligator up the river and spotted a smaller one up there as well.

The 2007 ATX season will come to an end at Buchanan on 12/2 giving us a good idea of the club Top 6 and AOY that will be determined at the next club meeting on 12/4. Check-in starts at 5:55am and first cast is at 6:40am. Good luck everyone!
